NBA 2k is the leader of NBA video games. This is clear. The potential feat of course is that, is no competition, they can take a backseat in development. It’s been rumored that NBA Live could be making a comeback but we’ll see.
Anyway, I have seven copies of NBA 2K games. And so I think I could talk about some small tweaks that could make the game experience better.
In My Career, I really like how they’ve expanded the player into interviews and the draft experience and the endorsements. He also has a better idea of what fans and writers think of him as well as fellow players. But I think it would be cool if, when you finally decide to retire, you have the option of trying to be a coach or a GM or something. A front office position. We see it all the time in the real NBA.
So, essentially, My Career would turn into Association Mode. There are a couple of drawbacks. For one, unless you don’t hop onto the next year’s version of My Career, you probably won’t retire. In 2k13, they give you a chance to work towards Hall of Fame goals. Perhaps, you could retire as soon as you meet those requirements if the player wants to. I mean, I made it through my fourth year and I’ve met 9/10 Hall of Fame requirements. If I go through one more season, I’ll most likely meet one more criteria and be eligible to make the HOF at age 25. Cool. Then what? Retire and make some noise in the front office.
So, speaking of association mode, one of the things they do in Madden is the ability to change uniforms and relocate. I think it would be cool to do that in 2k. An expansion team might be too much but the ability to be able to change a team’s look and/or location adds value to the front office experience. Also, controlling prices and budgets for marketing and stuff would be cool. Maybe it’s the business side of me but it would be cool. Maybe just make an entirely new mode called owner’s mode where you could play as owner during each season. You can hire/fire people in various departments and control the financial state of the team and stuff since association is geared towards being a GM. Heck, make a coach mode too where you act as a coach. Here, you would really focus on player management. You would be a coach.
Those are my favorite modes to play in. One more thing though. What’s up with the old teams not being complete? I mean, for the 00-01 Sixers, missing Eric Snow isn’t a big deal. But, how can you put the Kings in there and not have Chris Webber? 84-85 Sixers don’t have Dr. J and Charles Barkley. If there are legal issues, then fine. But, there are a lot of other teams that you can put in the game with better/complete rosters. Sheesh. Perhaps, and this is a stretch, but instead of classic teams, maybe do all time greats per team. Like, all of the great Lakers put on one team and all the great Celtics on a team. That could be cool. The best taking on the best. Each player would be in his prime or best year at least statistically.
It’s probably too late for 2k14, but 2k15 has a chance to add these little changes that could really add to extended play value. We’ll see.
