Weekly News 13: Good, Positive, Weird, and Funny

Ah, it’s been a while since I posted any news since I haven’t done DGS all week. So, here we go with this week’s past news.

We got a bunch of veterans being treated like the heroes they are.

A group of Marines on their way home from Afghanistan got something they didn’t expect after spending five days getting on and off planes on their way to San Diego: cheers from a crowd of police officers, a fire truck water salute and first-class plane tickets.

There’s more about those plane tickets in the link.

Starbucks is doing things for veterans as well. Or at least, it’s planning to.

Because Starbucks values the skills and talents of men and women in the U.S. military, it has announced a strategic plan to hire at least 10,000 veterans and active-duty spouses over the next five years.

We always see and hear about how hard it is coming back after service and living a normal life. Good for Starbucks for doing this. And, in such a short period of time. See what else they plan on doing.

We got a man who thinks, not just acts, he’s a dog. He dresses up like a dog, eats dog food, and even sleeps in a doghouse. Have mercy. No, wait, he barks, chases cars, and hates cats too. Uh-oh! Check the whole story here.

Despite a government shutdown, the October job report came back and was shockingly good. Interestingly enough, unemployment still rose from 7.2% to 7.3%. Still, a lot more than what was expected was hired and that’s a good thing.

At first, this sounds bad, but, after reading it, I gotta say, this is adorable. A couple ran for an elected office against each other. The wife, a Democrat, went up against her husband, a Republican. They treated the entire thing as a little game about a serious manner. Key moments were how the husband was sure the wife would win. She did. When asked to give a comment about her winning, he said “I’m glad the person I voted for won” Awww!

I think we heard about this one. VP Joe Biden made a little boo-boo and called up the wrong guy to congratulate on winning the mayoral election for Boston. And, according to the man, this isn’t even close to the first time this has happened in being mistaken for the now mayor of Boston since they have the same name.

Whew! This news is crazy. This guy, who changed his name to “human” is now trying to get a plate that reads: COPSLIE which, I’m assuming, is “cops” “lie”. He’s taken his case to New Hampshire’s highest court. He’s fighting for freedom of speech while the DMV is saying:

“The primary purpose of a plate is to identify motor vehicles, not to engage in public debate. A statement against an individual would be defamatory. In this case the plate would have insulted an entire class of workers.”

I’m going to keep my eye on this to see who wins. This is interesting.

Lastly, a homeless veteran gets a transformation and now a new lease on life. There’s a video showing his transformation. Kinda cool. I guess Starbucks could hire him?

And that’s it, folks.
