Three Mistakes I’ve Made With This Blog

We all f up at some point. I’ll tell you how bad it was managing this blog.

1. Not having a plan

I started this blog without a real plan for it. I didn’t even know how to describe it. I remember one time this guy asked me “what do you do?” and I was all excited when I said “I write on my blog” and he’s like, “cool, what do you write about?”

Crap.

See, back then it was Dante’s Opinion. So, everything I wrote about was centered around my opinion. So, I felt like some sort of self righteous, arrogant, stereotypical blogger dude when I said “I write about my opinion on stuff. It’s called Dante’s Opinion so it’s my opinion on whatever topics”

Yuck. I didn’t even have like, a genre to express my opinion on. I was ready to talk about anything. Sports. Politics (idiot). Culture. All of that and more. I just jumped in without really thinking about it all.

When you compare it to what you see today, you realize what I’m saying. Like, today there’s a blog and I got sexy logos and a newsletter and all of these things. There’s research involved with the name of the blog and “optimism” and all of that. Like, there was ACTUAL PLANNING going on. Building a strategy and stuff like that. Having a vision and sticking with it. Those previous years was me gradually coming to the realization of what I wanted to do with this space.

Dante’s Optimism is the 3rd name change for this blog. It’s called Dante’s Optimism, but do you have any idea what I’m optimistic about?

I post nice stuff like good news, inspirational quotes, and all of that. But, is that something I really care about? Do I believe in that?

The Worst Year of Dante’s Optimism

I mean, you saw this coming. We’ll talk about the worst year in terms of views for this blog. We’ll exclude 2018, for obvious reasons.

No, I have to admit, I thought 2011 would be the worst year. That was when I first started my blogging journey. I had no idea what I was doing. But, in 2012, things went downhill as I didn’t even get half of the views from the year prior.

2012 was, indeed, the worst year. And I have no idea why.

Still, 2011 and 2012 combined didn’t get me 1,000 views. Christ. I mean, c’mon, dude. 2018 already has more views than those two years combined. And 2018 is trying to avoid being the third worst view year. Like, dang!

The Best Year of Dante’s Optimism

This might make me sad, but I want to talk about the blog’s best year, in terms of views.

That year, was 2015. It barely beat out 2014. Ever since 2015, each year has gotten a LOT worse for the blog’s performance even as my love for it grows. For instance, 2016 saw 2015’s views drop by more than half. And 2017 dropped even more.

So, what’s the deal with 2015, and why did things drop?

The worst post on this blog

Yesterday, I looked at the most viewed post on this blog. When I went o look at the least viewed post, I found a 19-way tie. 19!? Sheesh.

At first, I was going to rank those posts from how much they suck. But then, I noticed a nice number of those posts were from the same series, which means that there was a particular kind of post that simply didn’t get any love.

For me, it’s a little concerning, since this series is more reflective of the blog you see today. It’s some sort of sequel to the greatest and most viewed series on this blog. Yet, people didn’t want to look at them.
