Daily Good News 49: Man donates $3,000 to food pantry, Young siblings save grandfather’s life

life-quotes-41

This first bit of news is slightly odd. A man was trying to donate $3,000, and got turned down twice. Yeah. Apparently, his status as an atheist was what drove people away. He eventually gave it to a food pantry.

Mehta originally raised the money in late October following news that American Legion Post 134 pulled its support from the Morton Grove Park District in response to a park board commissioner’s refusal to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. Park officials returned the check, though, citing a desire to avoid a “First Amendment dispute.”

He next tried the Morton Grove Public Library, but experienced similar results. A library board trustee called Mehta’s blog, the Friendly Atheist, a “hate group,” and questioned the legality of accepting a donation originally intended for the park district.

So, this leads me to this question: If you were an organization and were presented with a check for $3,000 from the same man, would you accept it? Before you answer, look at this:

Meet the Team of Bloggers: Dallas and Nia

As promised, I have assembled a fantastic team of bloggers for DALANEL. I have a page called Meet the Team which is under What Is DALANEL?. There, you’ll be able to keep up with them. That page is filled with bios for each of them and links to their content on the site as well as social media accounts so you can follow them too. Right now, the page is slightly bare. I wrote out bios for them but, in the near future, they should have something up to represent themselves so the page will grow over time. I’m just going to give a brief preview of each person.

First, Dallas T. makes a return. She’s 17. My cousin. And, quite frankly, she’s like a sister to me as well. We talked about it and while she won’t be contributing often, she’ll be around. She ran a blog for a little bit but she’s not really into that all that much. Still, there’s some great content there. I think she has a great mind if only because she and I think alike fairly often. I would hope she can take a few Dante’s Opinion posts for me. It would be Dallas’ Opinion of course. Follow her on Twitter.

Next is Nia. This is the same Nia that helped me with the lighting for the cantata. At 11, she’s an aspiring journalist. She wants to be the best. This is her first blogging experience. I don’t know if this will be the start of a wonderful career for her but make sure you show your support. Even as kids, people can do great things. I’m excited to see what she brings to the table. I’m hoping that her journalistic heart can help me with the Daily Good News in terms of research and even posting. Don’t be surprised to see this young one pack a punch. She speaks her mind and is honest and that’s one of the things I love about her. Nia’s on Google+ so add her in your cutest blogger circle.

Ah yes, this is gonna be fun.

Recruitment for New Writers Going…Okay

images bloggers uniteI got some news about adding a team of bloggers/writers to DALANEL: I’m getting closer to adding a couple of folks. One is already registered on site and we’re in the process of setting the account up as well as getting a first post ready. I’ve talked to another “friend” of mine (you already know I don’t have friends) to help out as well.

There’s a good chance that each of these people will blog about whatever they want, with the guideline only being something positive. Also, don’t expect them to blog very often; I’m hoping a few posts per month. On the flip side, they could make appearances in my featured posts like Daily Good News, Dante’s Opinion, and Wednesday Word. Heck, they could form their own feature if they’d like.

All in all, when it’s all said and done, there should be 2-3 new bloggers set up by January. That’s good news because this will help the site grow as well as giving more voices for you.

It’s risky going out like this because it could backfire on the sense that it doesn’t work out. Still, I’ve been recruiting hard in recent weeks in my very small circle of fellow bloggers/writers.

The idea of new things excites me more than Cookie Monster given the keys to a bakery! Stay tuned.

When Does Good News Become Stale?

The reason why I started this blog was because I got numb from all of the negative stuff I read and saw. I knew I had a problem when I shrugged at hearing about some shooting. It’s like “oh, this week’s shooting took place in…”. There’s no sting for me. And it was wearing me down, man.

Insert Daily Good News

It’s been really fun finding and posting various stories that I’ve shown you so far. Keep in mind that I was doing that with the Daily Good Stuff and even back when it was Good Friday posts. So, I’ve been doing this for a while now. However, this is the first time I’ve really focused on it. As in most things, when you first start, the new discoveries can be fascinating. But then, after a while, it can get old.

Part of it is human nature, I guess. We need constant stimulation. Something fresh.

Already, there were a couple of times whole researching for stories where I kinda zoned out. Like it was a chore. Yeah, we all have our days. Right now, I’m not close to being bored with it all. But, I know it can happen. It’s possible that hearing about a hero can cause me to shrug.

But, is that a bad thing?

Daily Good News 16

I’ve really enjoyed Daily Good News. I think it’s gonna be a hit. December’s off to a nice start, huh? I hope it has for you. Let’s get on to the post.

A 16 year old worked hard to afford his iPad. Next thing you know, it accidentally gets burned in a fired pit. Long story short, a stranger found out about it, and gave the teen a gift card to Best Buy to buy a new one.

This is some fascinating news.

Boffins in Canterbury say they have developed a cancer-detecting breath test machine that could save millions of lives. They claim it can detect the very earliest stages of a wide range of cancers, long before any symptoms appear.

Man, if this works that’s huge.

Okay, that’s all I got for ya.

Daily Good News 10

We made it to the tenth Daily Good News. It’s been doing okay. I simply don’t feel like talking about the blog’s performance anymore. Let’s get through this post.
