The Daily Positive: Boy Scout Raises Money to Donate Oxygen Masks

away from negativity

If you’re been following this blog for a while, you may have picked up on an interesting fact: I’m not a big fan of animal related stories. However, I decided to go with this one today.

Duncan McGee, a 12-year-old Boy Scout who attends Endeavour Middle School in New Haven, has questioned his father David McGee, a firefighter and EMT at the New Haven Fire Department, for the longest time about how the department rescues dogs.

“I told him that it’s not usually in the budget to buy things like that because, again, we have limited resources and we spend them on human lives and not pet lives,” David McGee said. “He thought it would be a good idea if he could find a way to help rescue pets.”

So of course, Duncan decided to do something about that. After starting a campaign on GoFundMe, he spread the word.

He put flyers up at places in town, including the fire department and pet grooming salon, and shared the link to the page on Facebook.

The page received 88 shares and raised $500 from 21 donors in two months.

The donations allowed him to purchase five animal oxygen kits from the Wag’N O2 Fur Life Program, an educational and public safety company located in Virginia that provides pet oxygen masks to first responders across the country.

That’s great. Duncan himself has a dog and would hope someone would be able to help her if something happened. So his drive came from a personal place.

Justice just go married. She was happy. Excited. Then, a car accident.

Justice was lucky to survive the crash, but sadly her memory of their wedding day 19 days previous had vanished. In fact, for some time she didn’t even know she was married.

Jeremy, the husband, added this:

“She has memory loss from about five weeks before the wedding,” he said, “which is when we actually started to plan and put the wedding into motion.”

So, Jeremy is now trying to raise money to do it all over again.

Jeremy has so far managed to raise $3,139 out of his $5,000 target and hopes to hold the ceremony on their first anniversary.

The Daily Positive: Sheriff Rescues Woman from Fire

It’s back, hopefully for a long time. The Daily Positive is a quick post with a quote and a piece of good news.

possible

An off duty Sheriff deputy helped save a woman from a house fire.

“Due to the intense flames crews were forced to combat the blaze from the exterior of the home,” Gwinnett Fire Lt. Jerrod D. Barrett said.

Prior to the fire department arriving, the Sheriff deputy assisted with rescuing a female occupant from the back porch using an extension ladder.

It doesn’t have to take a badge or paycheck to be a hero. The Sheriff did what he did most likely because that’s just how he rolls.

The Daily Positive: Girl Overcomes Physical Limitations

thPRXDQO0E

A 12 year old is living her life, despite this:

Kennedy was born with Goldenhar syndrome, a rare craniofacial disease in which facial features and the spine don’t form properly.

She has had 19 surgeries over the years and has dealt with multiple medical issues, including scoliosis and chronic sinus infections.

Now, while some girls (and guys) may find this to be devastating, she says “it’s awesome”. A primary focus was that our girl has a clip on ear.

“I’ve seen that it’s given her confidence,” Kennedy’s mother, Amy Hendershott, said of the ear. “I think it’s given her that little extra boost that she’s needed for middle school. She is confident enough whether she wears it or not. And she’s perfect whether she wears it or not.”

You’ll want to read the entire story. I’ll give you this last piece:

Kennedy’s family has preached all along a message of acceptance. We don’t all look the same. We don’t all sound the same. And that’s perfectly fine.

It sure is.

The Daily Positive: Boy and Father Hiking to Raise Money

th2BX65K2M

A boy, Landen, and his father, Vince, are trying to raise money for sick kids. Here’s how it started:

To understand why 10-year-old Landen Martinez has such a big, generous heart, you have to go back about eight years to when his father Vince decided to grant a wish on his own and charter a helicopter flight for young man named Ryan who had terminal cancer.

Landen was only a toddler, but he was watching.

Years later, Landen wanted to go hiking with his dad. Vince saw that the weather would be fine. It wasn’t.

He packed plenty of food and water – but no amount of preparation would stop a sudden and violent monsoon storm.

They were alone and terrified.

“I looked him in the eye and I said, ‘hold on to my hand, we’re not going to stop, we’re too far to go back.’ We kept going, we made it to the top – I thought, ‘wow, he never quit!’” said Martinez.

Only six years old at the time, Landen apparently fell in love with hiking after that trip. Now-a-days, he’s hiking for a purpose.

Then a few months ago, Vince had a proposal for his son.

“I said, ‘’let’s hike Mount Fuji, that’s a higher peak. And the first words out of his mouth was, ‘how can I help other kids through this? How can I help other kids with this hike?’” said Martinez.

It was Landen’s first instinct.

“I remembered when I was little; I remembered about the kid my dad took on a helicopter…and then I thought, ‘if I hike Mount Fuji, I could raise money for kids like that,’” said Landen.

“I almost started crying, to be honest with you. Very proud of him, big heart,” said Martinez.

Make-A-Wish Foundation is where the money’s heading. They already have $5,000 raised and plan to raise plenty more.

The Daily Positive: Girl Leaves Half of Life Savings to Charity

better

A touching story. Very short but touching.

Ella Westervelt was always a planner. The little girl with a big smile had big plans to help kids. Before she died, she wrote a will, giving half of her life’s savings to the children’s cancer association. CCA helped Ella for 2 1/2 years as she battled lymphoma. In return Ella left CCA half her estate precisely $296.55.

Sweet Ella. Rest in peace.
