Monday Motivation: Appreciate the black folks

I don’t normally get hype about Black History Month. I’m Brown. Where’s my month!? But seriously, black people have made contributions when given the chance. I encourage you to look into who black people have positively changed society.

Inventions. Achievements. The President. Black people have come a long way; but we have a ways to go. I truly hope that you give us a chance if you doubt us. I promise we’re pretty awesome people.

I was thinking about doing something here at DALANEL to showcase the positives of black people. Then I realized that I didn’t have the balls to do it; so I’ll jut use this post.

Your Monday Motivation today is a month long.

The Daily Positive: Man Stopped From Committing Suicide; Now Helps Others

thinking and steering

A 15 year old was ready to jump off a bridge.

“I had already climbed over the railing and I remember this person coming up behind me – this man and I didn’t see his face and I don’t really remember what we talked about but I remember he was wearing a light brown jacket and he was a little taller than me. He just talked to me. He didn’t try to solve all my problems or give me any magic solutions or anything, we just talked like any two people meeting on an overpass in Cape Breton.”

As it turned out, there was another person there that was encouraging the teen to jump. Anyway, Mark Henick’s life was saved by this stranger. Now:

That stranger made a huge difference to Henick, who has since devoted his life to helping others who may have mental health issues. Henick has the unique qualification of having survived mental illness.

“I extend a hand to someone who may need help now,” said Henick. “I know first hand just how effective that is.”

Lastly, Mark is trying to find this stranger, who saved him in 2002.

Now he wants to find that person so he can thank him. As part of the #BellLetsTalk initiative to get Canadians talking about mental health, Henick has spoken on Canada AM and has tweeted his desire to find this person.

It now looks as though this will actually happen – Henick said he had a credible lead that he hopes will lead him to the person.

“What if I find him, what will I say – I don’t know,” said Henick. “And I still don’t know. But here we are.”

Read the entire story to find out more about Mark’s charity and more stuff.

The Daily Positive: Sick Boy Sends Friend on Vacation

Welcome to The Daily Positive. This post is meant to provide a quick, positive boost to your day. Good News is the center of this post, and it will have other items like quotes, scripture, and other stuff I decide on.

Let’s start with a quote:

For the good news

Let me set it up. So, Six year old Levi was sick enough that he qualified for a request to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He used it on his best friend, Emma. She was by his side during his illness and he wanted…well, look…

To show his gratitude, Levi wished for Emma to take a special trip to Florida, “to visit the theme parks and see the ocean.” For the little Indiana girl who’d never been on a plane, the surprise vacation was truly the trip of a lifetime.

When Emma and her family went to Florida, they brought along a “Flat Levi” figure, which they included on all of their adventures. At their welcome home party, they gave Levi a scrapbook of photos from “Emma and Levi’s trip.”

Sometimes, when I’m doing research for stories, I run into stuff like this. These stories…ahem…get me a little…uh…emotional. You gotta hit the link and look at some of the photos.

“You’ve Received 200 Follows On DALANEL”

I’ve said in the past that my favorite group of followers are from WordPress. So, when WordPress told me I hit 200 followers, I was happy.

In total, DALANEL has over 1500 followers when you add up Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, and Tumblr. Yet, WordPress continues to be my favorite, even though it’s not the biggest. If I’m adding correctly, this is 4th largest.

I want to thank each of you for following this blog, no matter where you are; but especially to the WP followers. Considering that the blog’s birthday is a couple of weeks away, this is a nice present. Thanks!

Keep blogging!

Fearless Friday: Community Hero Day

Well here’s something interesting. A day to celebrate the heroes of your town.

Collin’s Community Hero Day is a free event supporting heroes in New Richmond. This is an opportunity for your children to meet the Police, EMS, Fire & Armed Service workers in your community.

This is a day for the kids and their families to get that up close and personal look at what these folks do. But, there’s another side to this story:

The money raised during the event goes into a fund set up in Collin’s name. That money is then given to financially support public safety personnel in the days that immediately follow a traumatic call.

“Many of us feel an obligation to quickly return to work due to money reasons,” Albee said. “We provide a stipend of cash to go for stuff like buying groceries, paying some bills so the emergency responders can take a few days to recover and be with family. Collin’s fund also donates money to programs such as Project Life Saver and other already established programs that aim at helping us help people.”

We gotta do more of that. Don’t our heroes deserve that?

New Feature: The Daily Positive

In keeping with the quick and simple style of posts here at DALANEL, I’m introducing a quick hit to start the day. The Daily Positive is a quick positive boost for you.

The initial run is a Bible Verse, Quote, and Good News article.

Now, you might be thinking “What about Thursday Thoughts (quotes) and Fearless Friday (good news)?” The answer to that is simple. The quotes for Thursday Thoughts are more to get you to think whereas The Daily Positive has quotes that are meant to inspire and motivate. As for the Good News, I’ll be sharing positive news that are not hero themed as Fearless Friday takes care of that.

The Good News is the cornerstone of this feature. It’s possible that I’ll add another element besides quotes and scripture, but, ultimately, this is not supposed to take more than 10 minutes to get through. None of the weekly features are meant to take more than 10 minutes to get through.

Daily Good News and Daily Word are sort of resurrected at the same time with this post. Guess what? I plan to make this a weekend post as well! Saturday and Sunday are just as daily as any other day.
