Fearless Friday: Man saves boy from icy pond

We get this story often of how somebody falls under ice and into the body of water. Some freeze. Some are saved.

This is a story of someone saved. But, you already knew that.

Sgt. Shawn Yech saved Andrew Seils. Let’s find out how!

David Place told the Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph that Yech didn’t hesitate. He pulled Andrew from the water using an extension cord he tied around his foot.

“As soon as he set eyes on Andrew, he was running,” he said. “He seemed to know how to read the ice. The way he crawled out there, he snaked around a little bit until he heard the ice popping.”

Andrew survived, although there were some interesting effects.

Andrew’s mother, Melissa Place, said her son lost his voice for a day, but had no permanent damage. Doctors told him to protect his lungs when he was outside by breathing through a scarf.

Still, let’s be grateful for heroes like Shawn Yech.

Fearless Friday: 13 year old saves family from fire

In this new yet old feature on DALANEL, Fearless Friday looks at good news from across the web with one theme: Heroes. This story is a perfect example.

13 year old Ania Polk found that her house was on fire. She got her siblings out of there safely.

The brave girl went back upstairs to get her brothers out of the home. She credits her quick actions to her teacher, Ms. Pamela Scott. She says she learned what to do during health class a few weeks ago. According to the girl’s parents, she created a home escape plan and checking the smoke alarms.

It’s a teacher’s dream when the lessons they give are carried out. That’s awesome for Ania. The entire story can be read here. Take a lesson from this girl and make sure that, in the event of an emergency, you know what the plan is. I learned my tricks from Boy Scouts. But, easily look on the internet for home escape plans. Don’t wish you did.

So…that’s what Fearless Friday is all about. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I’m always trying to tweak some things. So, don’t think this is the usual.
