15 Followers from Completing Social Media Challenge

I wrote about a month ago how I had a goal to get to 800 followers before 2014. I did the math of how many followers I would need per day, week, and I think month. Welp, it’s going better than expected.

In case you don’t know, my following comes from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Google+, and WordPress users. Most of the new follows have come from WordPress and Tumblr so big thanks to ya. Twitter, LinkedIn, and G+ helped as well. Facebook actually hasn’t grown much and I rarely get traffic from there even though it’s my largest following.

Still, I am only 15 followers, as I write this, away from the goal. A big thanks to all of you for following me. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here: It’s the content of the blog that you’re following. Not necessarily me. I also noticed a spike of follows as I stopped writing personal stuff. So, I will also keep this in mind. Just as I suspected, it’s not me you want; it’s the Daily Good Stuff and the Weekly features on the weekends. I mean, even looking at the most view posts stats I can see that too.

  1. I love your honesty about your own writing – “I also noticed a spike of follows as I stopped writing personal stuff. ”
    LOL!

And you’ll make your goal; you’ve got more than 6 weeks left in the year so 15 more followers will be easy peasy!

    • Yup, that’s why I rarely get high or low when someone else talks about my writing or anything. I’m usually brutally honest with myself and to others (I probably got that from mom). When I had 700 as the goal, the blog was moving very slowly at the time; right before July. During July, the blog’s best month in performance, it took a grand leap. Of course, I was doing all kinds of stuff that month from the video series to the play and all of the birthday stuff since I was born in there. Then, beginning of August, Tumblr started catching on and so that spiked the follows a bit. Once again, I underestimate the blog and it would appear it’ll easily take down this 800 goal. I’m going to have to be more bold next time. Ya know, set the bar a little higher.

      • One of things I noticed is that photos seem to appeal to that audience. I know it took a while from when I first set up my account to when I got my first follow in August, but, my Daily Good Stuff posts are the only things that get attention since I have a funny image in them. I don’t remember where I read it, but, something about a set amount of characters in your post show up as a “summary” in the Tumblr feed if you connect your blog to your account. Anyway, if your photo is past that character limit, it won’t show up. Only reason why I believe this is because, I started putting the photo close to the beginning of the post, after the quote and scripture, and, soon after, things started picking up. However, don’t take my word for it since I don’t remember as well as I have yet to test it out by moving the photo lower in the post and outside of the character limit to see if the photos still appear. For sure, I at least know that only the photos get attention for me. Other than that, I’m pretty shocked that I’m even getting attention from there. Tumblr, (despite it being the second smallest following) since the first appearance to the blog in August, has been my top social media referrer…for all time. So, it’s something to look into I guess depending on what audience we’re dealing with.
