Today in good news history: Gideons International is formed

In 1899, The Gideons International was formed. I’ll let their official site tell you what happened:

Only three men were present at that meeting: John H. Nicholson, Samuel E. Hill, and Will J. Knights. They organized with Hill as president, Knights as vice president, and Nicholson as secretary and treasurer. Much thought was given to what the name of the association should be, and after special prayer that God might lead them to select the proper name, Mr. Knights arose from his knees and said, “We shall be called Gideons.” He read the sixth and seventh chapters of Judges and showed the reason for adopting that name.

Yup, July 1st. And, if you’ve been in a hotel and checked the night stand next to your bed, you most likely saw the Bible. Thank Gideons International for that sexy item.

DALANEL in July: A look at history

Last year at DALANEL, I took a look at famous birthdays, events, and holidays that happened in July. This year, in matching DALANEL’s theme, I will give a brief look into good news that have happened for that particular day. It’s time for a history lesson, folks.

That’s what’s going on at DALANEL for July.

Anything else? I’ll still be keeping up with the Daily Word, Monday Motivation, and Wednesday Word. I’m going to let the historic good news cover Good News Friday.

Will we hear from the DALANEL staff? I and Dallas T’s birthday fall in this month. We’ll see (I wouldn’t want to spoil any surprises).

Last July set a record in views for the blog at the time. DALANEL’s monthly views have been in decline since January so I’m hoping that July gives me a boost. That would be a nice birthday present.

Ability and Desire

Just because someone has the desire to do something does not mean they have the ability.

Just because someone has the ability does not mean they have the desire.

And yet, we tend to associate these things as hand in hand. True, having the desire AND ability for something is ideal, but it doesn’t always happen that way.

I have the ability to sing. I have a nice gift. I’m not going to blow you away, but I can hold a tune. However, I don’t have a desire to sing in choirs or talent shows or American Idol or something. That’s not something I aspire to be; a singer.

On the flip side, someone can have the desire to sing, but has absolutely no chance of being even a decent singer. Simply put, they don’t have it. Even with practice, it’s never going to happen. They have the heart though. They have the desire.

Monday Motivation: Stand up for yourself

Today, I want you to stand up for yourself.

Who else will?

You have to stand up for your family. Your beliefs. Your values. You.

Be proud of yourself and don’t let others make little of who you are. Loud and proud, baby. There’s only going to be one of you, so you might as well aim to make a stamp in your time. You have gifts and talents and characteristics that make you freakin’ awesome. So, take advantage of that.

Stand up for yourself. Do it.

Good News Friday: Girl uses Facebook to save her father’s life

Facebook is bad news. That’s why a ten year old girl used it to save her father’s life. Such a terrible network, that Facebook. More like Fakebook, right?

So, her dad was sitting on the porch during a storm and the high winds knocked down a tree on top of him. In the perfect horror movie setting, the service was down for the cell phones and there was no landline. So, there was no way to contact anybody for help.
